Kaytee Chinchilla bath dust is made of a natural volcanic mineral containing pumice, volcanic ash or pumicite. This is essential for Chinchillas and must be done at least once a week for five to ten minutes at a time. It is important to discard any damp or soiled bath dust.
Chinchillas come from the high rocky slopes of the Andes mountains. There are lots of rocks but very little vegetation or standing water. So wild Chinchillas have adapted by taking dust baths in volcanic ash or dust. Bathing in dust clears away any dirt and debris on their fur, and keeps it silky soft. It protects the Chinchillas coat by absorbing extra oils and moisture.
